Gayo Tribe Traditional House



Gayo tribe is an ethnic group who inhabit the central highlands of Aceh.
Gayo tribe in the majority located in Central Aceh, Bener Meriah, Gayo Lues and 3 sub-districts in East Aceh, namely Sub Serbe So Peunaron and Simpang Clear.
Also Gayo tribe also inhabit several villages in the district of Southeast Aceh and Aceh Tamiang.
Gayo tribe is Muslim and they are known devout in his religion. Gayo tribe uses a language called Gayo language
Gayo society living in a small community called the village. Each village is headed by a gecik. Collection of several villages called kemukiman, led by mukim. Traditional governance system in the form of the element of leadership that called Sarak Opat, comprising:

* Reje
* Petue
* Imem
* Rayat

At the present time some fruit kemukiman is part of the district, with elements of leadership consists of: gecik, vice gecik, Imem, and scholars who represent the people.

A village is usually inhabited by several groups of clans (split). Members of a mutual feeling derived from a common ancestor, still know each other, and develop relationships remain in various traditional ceremonies. Lines drawn on the principle of patrilineal descent. Prevailing system based on traditional marriage is the divisive exogamy, by indigenous peoples who settled after marriage patrilokal (juelen) or matrilocal (angkap).

Smallest kinship groups called saraine (nuclear family). Unity of several nuclear families called sara kitchen. In the past few sara kitchen living together in a long house, so called sara umah. Some fruit longhouse joined into one split (clan). At the present time many nuclear families that inhabit their own homes. In the past people Gayo mainly develop livelihoods in rice farming and livestock breeding, with a complicated customs livelihoods. In addition there are people who gardening, fishing, and gathering of forest products. They also developed a craft to make pottery, weaving, and weaving. Now the dominant livelihood is gardening, especially the coffee crop. Handicrafts made of ceramic and wicker never endangered, but with maketh this region as one tourist destination in Aceh, ceramics began to be developed again. Other crafts are also a lot of attention is the craft made with openwork embroidery motif typical.
