Gunung Agung


DOES your outdoor activities enthusiast? Climbed the mountain for example? Ever heard of a mountain called Mount Agung in Bali? Gunung Agung is the highest mountain on the island of Bali. The volcano is beginning to have an altitude of about 3142 meters above sea surface level (asl), but after the eruption in 1963 is estimated to drop to 2920-3014 feet altitude above sea level. Currently, the highest peak of Mount Agung is situated in the southwest, just above the Pura Besakih.

For the Balinese, Gunung Agung is a sacred mountain which is a sign of greatness of the Almighty. Another incident, approximately 40 days before the catastrophic eruption of Mount Agung occur, the Indonesian government has launched the event Ekadasa Rudra (the celebration of Pura Besakih every hundred years) on March 8, 1963 as an event of international tourist visits. Although since the end of the month of February 1963 Gunung Agung began to show a fairly dangerous activity, like spewing smoke, dust and rumbling noises, but the Indonesian government was reluctant to step on the implementation of the ritual.

But in the end, the event was also deferred until the year 1979 because of safety reasons the tourists. A quite surprising, the massive eruption of Mount Agung only really happened on March 17, 1963 (other versions mention March 18) after the tourists left the site plan the celebration Ekadasa Rudra.

Gunung Agung is located in District Rendang, Karangasem regency, Bali province, Indonesia.


Easy ways Towards Location
To go via Mount Agung Besakih, tourists can start the journey from the city of Denpasar with a distance of about 25 km to the north. Alternatively, tourists can travel from the City Semarapura (Klungkung Regency) to the Pura Besakih using public transportation (bemo) and costs around Rp 5,000 (April 2008).

For climbing activities, tourists can take two paths, namely the route of the Pura Besakih and Pura Pasar Agung route from. Routes of Pura Besakih arguably quite popular, because through this route climbers will reach the highest peak of Mount Agung. From Pura Besakih, tourists can travel to where the camp with a travel time of about 4 hours on foot. Furthermore, the final ascent through a fairly flat ridge to reach the top / edge of the crater and takes about 2 hours. Meanwhile, the ascent from Pura Pasar Agung to the summit takes between 3-4 hours. It's just route through route Pura Pasar Agung far more precipitous than the routes Besakih.

ACCOMMODATION AND OTHER FACILITIES

In addition, if the tourists require climbing equipment, visitors can rent it at about the location of the climb. If you want to rent a lodging for a break or just wait for time to start climbing, tourists can stay at Pura Besakih and Pura Pasar Agung or renting guesthouses around the temple.
