Kampung Kapitan indeed one of China's heritage buildings. However, rather than the inherent characteristics of China there, but the blend of cultures Palembang, China and the Netherlands which feels thick colored area on the outskirts of this Musi River. According to humanists and historians Palembang, Djohan Hanafiah, Kampung Kapitan emergence associated with the collapse of the kingdom of Sriwijaya in the eleventh century and the emergence of the Ming Dynasty in China in the XIV century.
Since the era of Sriwijaya until now, the lifeblood of the Musi River water transportation routes to move the economy and the surrounding city of Palembang. Chronology of the ship going home, boat, getek, barges, tug boats and speed boat carrying the earth, can be seen. However, behind the dense activity in the Palembang river that divides into two, namely Seberang Ulu and Ilir, there are more attracted the attention of tourists, namely Kampung Kapitan.
Kampung Kapitan is a group of 15 building houses on stilts in the style of China, located in The Village 7 Ulu, Kecamatan Seberang Ulu 1. This village was originally a residence of a descendant of China-ranking officer lieutenant (captain), who worked for the Dutch colonial government.
Land in Seberang Ulu this is for the newcomers from outside Kilkenny. Interestingly, the shape of the house adopted a form of pyramid houses (the traditional home of Palembang), which cater for the nobles of Palembang. However, the shape of the house also adopted a typology of China's public house with a courtyard (open space) at its center, which is useful for penghawaan and the entry of light.
Tradition is also still visible on the interior of the house is equipped with a table for the ancestral shrine. This integration can be understood, because at the end of the Sultanate of Palembang, Tionghoa began to mingle with the indigenous people of Palembang by marriage or converted to Islam.
During Dutch colonial rule, Tionghoa amended from society into a society that has overseen special status. This is seen in column buffer on the front porch on the first house made of wood, brick column turned into a classic European style, although the proportions are adjusted with a look of the building.
Buildings in Kampung Kapitan core consists of three houses, is the largest building and overlooking the River Musi. Houses in the midst of the most often functioned to organize a party and a meeting place, while the second house on the east and west sides of houses.
From the ground, there is only one road into Kampung Kapitan which is about 800 feet from under the bridge. At the entrance gate there are two doors missing. But now, the elegance of Kampung Kapitan was almost lost. Only the old buildings are still standing, although many minor damage at various angles.
In addition, the buildings made of wood looks dull. However, the wooden walls are not damaged because it is made from wood unglen lasting for hundreds of years. Inside the house, ash tables and altars adorned with several statues worship god, also looks dusty and littered with cobwebs. Almost no one desk chair or cabinet that can describe the situation of the past. There are only a few photos padrone still emblazoned on the east parlor house.
Park is also the center of the village had become a neglected field. Two lions, a symbol of China's officer's house that had once adorned the front of the house also lost core. According Tjoa Kok Lim, Kampung Kapitan neglected after the departure of the descendants of lieutenant. Tjoa Kok Lim keep the house because the fourth sister to follow their husbands out of Palembang.
Kampung Kapitan fading fame also made children Tjoa Kok Lim chose to work in Jakarta and Lampung. He is now alone except for a daughter to keep the core of both houses, after the third house sold to someone else. Small houses in Kampung Kapitan also have mastered their inhabitants, no longer in family ownership padrone Tjoa Ham Hin.
