Exploring Borneo Forests


There is no end to explore the East Kalimantan region, which covers about 1.5 times the island of Java and Madura. Dense tropical forests, and wildlife and fauna is endemic, the main attraction of this region. Binoculars team recently explored it and look closely, the lungs of the world which is increasingly threatened. We departed from Sangatta City, capital of East Kutai regency.

You also must visit Goa Tewet, which is high enough location. Tewet Cave Karst Mountains in the cluster. The location was so remote, so very few people who came. High cave of about 1000 meters above sea level. In it are found the scratches prehistoric relic that is the witness of human civilization thousands of years ago, in Kalimantan.

This cave was found around the 90's by researchers from LIPI and ITB. And is thought to shelter early humans who live sedentary. Found images are expected palms aged about 20 thousand years before Christ. These hands are the property of the first tribe, who inhabit this region. When the island of the Philippines, the plains of South China, Malaysia and the island of Borneo are still united.

In addition there is also painting the palms of the river, deer and vegetation. This painting is like a map, regions and territories, are included in this prehistoric tribal power. But investigators so far are still guessing and do not know the deeper meaning, than this Tewet fruit paintings. Until now they still do research and they asked for this area should remain preserved from the hands of ignorant humans.

East Kalimantan shrouded in dense forest. And Bangkirai this is one area of this tree that grows towering to 50 meters with a very long life span to 150 years. This area is called Park Hill Bangkirai which was situated in a protected forest area which covers about 1500 hectares.

Bangkirai Hill Park is located quite far from the city of Balikpapan about 3 hours drive. Although remote and secluded, this area is quite challenging for the adventurous and one location that is Canopy Walk. Most of the trees that grow here are rare and you can also preserve it by way of adopting it. Who want to adopt a tree is usually free of cost of 5 million rupiah per year.

Travel to the location of Canopy Walk far enough and much less tiring who first came to this location. One of them is menjajalkan Canopy bridge is a walk in the tree at a height of 40 meters above sea level. Canopy Bridge is a bridge where you can menitinya diketinggian 50 meters from one tree to another and this bridge is the first bridge in Indonesia and built by engineers from the United States in 1958.

Not much is know about the sun bear, which proved to be a mascot of Balikpapan City in South Kalimantan. Balikpapan City was also found breeding bears, located at the Sungai Wain Nature Reserve. Sungai Wain Protection Forest was formerly known as sun bear habitat in Borneo. But unfortunately, the population is increasingly declining.

Ecosystems in this region is still possible sun bears, to survive. We can also see its meeting swamp forest ecosystem and green lowland forest ecosystems. Some orang-utan nests can still be found in a typical tree height. And this is a bear trail. But not easy to find, amid thick forest.
